Gothic 1 Remake Beginner Guide: 10 Essential Tips
Starting Gothic 1 Remake can be overwhelming. The penal colony is unforgiving, combat is skill-based, and the game doesn't hold your hand — there are no quest markers and no mini-map. This guide covers the most important things every new player should know, based on verified in-game mechanics and community discoveries.
1. Save Often — Quicksave Is Your Best Friend
Gothic 1 Remake is a hard game, and auto-saves don't happen often. Dying could send you back several minutes. Use Quick Save regularly:
- Keyboard: F5
- Controller: Left Bumper + Options Button
Tip: Save before every fight. The game lets you save at any time, and you should use multiple save slots to avoid getting stuck.
2. Follow Diego — Your First Escort Mission
Right after you arrive, you meet Diego. Talk to him thoroughly and let him escort you to the Old Camp. The walk protects you from dangers you can't handle alone yet. Useful tip: If NPCs you follow kill enemies, you still get the full experience points.
3. Get Your First Weapons Early
Once you and Diego pass the abandoned mine, pick up the pickaxe at the mine entrance on the left after the gate. Then keep left and follow the path up to the bridge — a molerat is waiting, but you'll also find your first weapon: a rusty sword.
More early weapon locations:
- Rusty Sword: In the Old Camp arena, pass through the metal gate on the right. At the end of the corridor, you'll find another rusty sword.
- Guard's Sword: At the ruined tower, lure beasts and orcs toward the guards until one dies, then loot his sword. This works anywhere guards fight monsters.
- Weathered Axe (13 Attack): In a cave just outside the Old Camp southern gate, on the body of Nek. Sly sends you to find him.
- Sting Mace (25 Attack, 22 Strength req): Challenge Kharim to a fight in the Old Camp and loot it from his body.
4. Choose Your Faction Carefully
There are three main factions in Gothic 1. Your choice is permanent for this playthrough and affects your gear, trainers, and story path:
| Faction | Location | Style | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Camp | Center of colony | Balanced, organized | Beginners |
| New Camp | West, near river | Freedom, magic (Circles of Water) | Mage builds |
| Swamp Camp | South, swamps | Psionic magic | Advanced players |
Recommendation: Join the Old Camp first. It's centrally located, has the most accessible early quests, and provides a balanced introduction. Visit all three camps before deciding.
5. Get a Map As Soon As Possible
Because there are no quest markers or compass, a map is essential. In the Old Camp, Graham (directly to the right after entering through the northern gate) sells maps for 28 ore. You can also convince him to hand it over for free by threatening violence — first talk to Diego about the Test of Faith, then go to Graham and insist the map should be free.
6. Talk to Every Named NPC
Gothic 1 Remake does not indicate which NPCs give quests. However, named NPCs (like Diego, Scatty, Fingers, Thorus) — not generic ones like "Digger" or "Guard" — will show up in your Glossary and often give quests. When reaching a new area, speak to every named NPC.
7. Use Escort Missions to Level Up Fast
You'll find two NPCs in the Old Camp who offer to escort you to other camps:
- Mordrag: Near the south gate (after receiving Thorus' task) — escorts to New Camp
- Baal Parvez: At the marketplace — escorts to Swamp Camp
These escort missions grant several thousands of XP because your ally kills monsters while you receive full experience. Progress will never come easier.
8. Learn to Parry — It Negates All Damage
Combat in Gothic Remake is brutal — most enemies can kill you in a few hits. However, you can completely negate all incoming damage by using Parry, taught by Scatty near the fighting pit in the Old Camp for 10 LP and 50 Ore.
How to parry: Press the block button when the enemy is about to swing. Against monsters, block briefly before the attack connects. The timing is tight but mastery makes combat manageable.
9. Cook Meat for Better Healing
When taking down enemies like molerats and scavengers, you can loot raw meat. Instead of eating it raw, use one of the many cooking pans found in camps and roads to cook it, granting significantly higher HP restoration.
10. Use the Glossary — It's Your In-Game Manual
In the menu, the Glossary tab functions like a manual. It explains systems, records NPCs, and collects information about camps and wildlife. You can:
- Filter NPCs by camp or trainer to find training opportunities
- View quests in journal style or list format
- Reread basic mechanics, especially for advanced systems like lockpicking
Tip: Take your own notes. Conversations often contain useful hints, and some decisions can prevent you from completing certain quests successfully.
Quick Start Checklist
- Talk to Diego immediately after the intro — let him escort you
- Pick up the rusty sword and pickaxe at the abandoned mine
- Get a map from Graham (28 ore or free with threats)
- Complete Thorus' task, then talk to Mordrag for escort XP
- Learn Parry from Scatty (10 LP + 50 Ore)
- Find Nek's body for the Weathered Axe
- Explore all three camps before joining a faction
- Save frequently with F5
Cheats and Console Commands
How to open console: Press ` (tilde) or F2 during gameplay. Check your key bindings if this doesn't work.

invisibility | Enemies ignore you |

spawn [item] | Spawn specified item |
goto [location] | Teleport to location |

Warning: Using cheats may disable achievements and can cause bugs. Save before experimenting.
